 “Eat the food you were designed to eat” claims The Paleo Diet book written by Loren Cordain, Ph.D. on its front page. This claim is based on evidence showing that basic human physiology has changed little or almost none on the last 40000 years; hence our dietary needs are the same as the Stones Agers.

Certainly, the ordinary diet in Australia is very far from what it used to be 40000 years ago and as a result we have become the nation with one of the highest obesity rates per capita in the world.

Paleo diet encourage you to eat what your ancestors ate and what you are genetically programmed to eat. Very simply, anything you can gather or hunt: Vegies, meats, eggs, fruits, nuts and seeds.  Or the so-called, none processed foods. I am rather to call them foods and to call anything else food’s products. (I personally believe that adding also beans and small quantities of grains to our food intake is perfectly fine and healthy for the majority of us)

As an Environmental Scientist and Fitness Trainer I have followed, recommend and supported this theory and diet for several years now (way before it became trendy and part of the Sydney Cafe's menu).

However, I am observing that the way different professionals and businesses are marketing, interpreting, and endorsing paleo has gone somehow wrong.

Human DNA has not changed much on the last 40000 years but other things have changed dramatically, and we need to adapt to it.  The food it was available then, is not the same you are getting at your grocery shop today.  Thereafter, the majority of the new-age “paleo” recommendations are misleading.

To make a very long topic super short I have put together a few facts that need to be considered when choosing Paleo or any other diet.

  • Contrary with the general new-age paleo recommendations, in paleo times there was not always meat available, humans used to expend days or even weeks not eating meat, as finding a prey and hunting it was not always possible.
  • The meats we eat nowadays have lots more fat and are rather different to what it used to be. Nowadays we bread our animals in confined spaces where they do not practically move. This animal are injected with hormones and antibiotics and commonly feed with food they are not meant to eat. Ex: A cow is a ruminant, hence should not eat grains as otherwise gets fat and sick.
  • The Paleolithic people gathered and hunted their food, honored the given land and their prey. Now, we pick food from the shops and sadly many of us are neither aware of the murder nor the gigantic environmental impact we are responsible for.
  • An exercise amount of protein in your diet will eventually lead to serious liver related problems

Again, to minimize a very vast topic into a short article, I listed my favorite nutritional guidelines lo help you decide what is best for you and your loved ones: 

  • Quality is first. Buy the best you can afford. Organic and local are BEST. Become a Qualitarian.
  • Eat only food and stay away from its processed products as much as possible
  • Do not believe in the food industry and most importantly do not believe in its misleading packaging. In fact, if the food is packaged then doubt it.
  • Respect all leaving beings and our Motherland. You do not need to eat as much meat as all the absurd high protein diets are leading you to. Beside, there is plenty of high quality none-meat protein available.
  • Get to know your food. Knowledge is your best friend.
